Yoong Kee is one of the oldest and surviving eating place since my childhood days. My grandpa absolutely love the food as it is cooked Teochew style. This shop is one of the pioneers in Bukit Mertajam township and the setting has been such since day 1. Do check out the original signboard and its first telephone number on the wall. Look up the ceiling and see the antique fan still in operation.
After placing our orders, we ordered White Man rojak as entree. The peanut serving was overdone considering I am a lover of peanut. The sauce is not as good as Black Man rojak but I will elaborate more on later posting on Bukit Mertajam rojak story.
First dish up is Deep Fried Tofu served with Sour Vinegar sauce. Tofu is Puling Goose Meat in teochew province. The locals are too poor to eat the real thing and often use tofu as an alternative. The tofu is fried at high temperature, the outer crust is crunchy while the inside is soft and hot! The vinegar sauce has shallots and chili which blends well with the tofu taste.
Tuna white cabbage - one of my favourite dish here. The ingredients are simple - TC Boy tuna in brine, garlic and white cabbage. Put them together and it's a classic good old dish.
The famous Kailan salted fish. This dish looks simple but takes years for the chef to master. I remember when the 3rd generation first took over the business, this dish was inedible. Only after years of practice standing in front of the HOT HOT wok and countless splashing of oil onto his hands that the grandson finally master this dish. It's a MUST TRY. The fragrance of the salted fish, mixed with Kailan stir-fried at exactly the right temperature and time, every mouthful has the sweetness of crunchy kailan and savory of the salted fish.
Steamed stingray Teochew style. It's sour and tint of spiciness combined with fresh fish meat steamed at the right temperature and time. It can only happened to very experience chef who cook this dish at least a million time.
